Gross to net salary in Belgium (2026): how it works
Moving to Belgium or comparing job offers? The gap between gross and net pay is large: on €3,000 gross a month, you take home roughly €2,150. Here is where the difference goes, step by step.
Three steps from gross to net
- Social security (ONSS, 13.07%) comes off first. It funds pensions, unemployment, healthcare and child benefits. On €3,000 gross that is €392.10.
- Withholding tax (précompte professionnel / bedrijfsvoorheffing) is an advance on your income tax, taken by your employer every month. It depends on taxable pay, your family situation and dependent children.
- The special social security contribution is a small monthly amount that rises with household income (about €25 a month at €3,000 gross).
A municipal tax (usually 6 to 8%) is added on top of federal tax. It is partly included in the withholding tax.
How income tax is calculated
Over the year, the tax office starts from taxable pay and deducts flat-rate work expenses (30%, capped at €6,070). It then applies the brackets:
| Annual taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| up to €16,720 | 25% |
| €16,720 to €29,510 | 40% |
| €29,510 to €51,070 | 45% |
| above €51,070 | 50% |
The first €11,180 (the tax-free allowance) is not taxed: 25% of that amount is taken off the tax. The allowance is higher if you have dependent children.
Examples: how much net?
Single person, no children, 7% municipal tax, 12 months a year:
| Monthly gross | ONSS | Tax + municipal tax | Estimated net | Share kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| €2,200 | €287.54 | €129.19 | ≈ €1,766 | 80% |
| €3,000 | €392.10 | €426.83 | ≈ €2,156 | 72% |
| €4,500 | €588.15 | €1,035.58 | ≈ €2,837 | 63% |
The higher the salary, the smaller the share you keep, because each extra euro falls in a higher bracket. On low wages, the work bonus (bonus à l'emploi) cuts social security further, so real net pay can be slightly higher than these figures.

What this calculation leaves out
- Meal vouchers, eco vouchers, a company car or group insurance: these come on top of net pay.
- The 13th month and double holiday pay, taxed at a special rate. See the holiday pay calculator.
- Your household: a partner with no income or dependent children lower the withholding tax.
For the employer, an employee costs much more than the gross salary: about 25 to 27% in employer contributions comes on top. The employer cost calculator gives the total.
